About us:
The Auburn Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Auburn, Massachusetts, and educating the public about town history. We accomplish this mission through the Auburn Historical Museum, which is open year-round on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm with free admission and through our free public meetings and events held throughout the year.
Internship Overview:
We are currently seeking motivated, detail-oriented college students for our 15-week internship program. This internship provides an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in museum work, particularly in historical research, collections management, and exhibit design. Interns will work alongside museum staff, contributing to the ongoing preservation and interpretation of local history.
Intern responsibilities will encompass several key areas:
- Research: Assist in researching topics in Auburn’s history, focusing on artifacts, events, and crafting biographies of town residents.
- Digitization: Digitize photographs, documents, and artifacts to aid in preservation.
- Inventory: Assist in maintaining an accurate inventory of artifacts, documents, photographs and other items.
- Processing: Help with accessioning, cataloging, and preparing new acquisitions for preservation, display, or storage.
- Data Entry: Transcribing historical documents into a digital form and adding metadata to digitized photographs, documents, and artifacts.
- Exhibit Design: Collaborate with the Curatorial team to map out an exhibit or display and include a publicity plan.
Skills & Qualifications:
Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and have an interest in learning about local history and museum studies. Strong research, writing, and organizational skills, attention to detail, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team is essential.
