Internships

Are you a student interested in history? The Auburn Historical Society and Museum offers two unpaid internship programs, one aimed for high school students and the other for college students. Each program offers students hands-on experience in several areas of museum studies, including research, digitization, collection care, and more.

High School

Each summer we welcome area high school students to intern at the Museum. Interns work on special projects and assist with organizing and running the Summer Kids programs that tie events and people in Auburn’s history with games and activities.

College

Beginning in 2025, we are offering a 15-week college internship program that gives students hands-on experience working with archival collections, artifacts, and exhibit design. For more information, view our College Internship Program page.

Intern Code of Conduct

All interns of the Auburn Historical Society & Museum must read and agree to the below Intern Code of Conduct that outlines the expectations, rules, and guidelines of internships.

  1. Attendance
    • Interns are expected to maintain a consistent and reliable attendance record. Please let us know as soon as possible if you will be absent or late.
  2. Dress Code
    • Wear appropriate clothes that are comfortable, practical, and in good condition. Inappropriate clothing, including graphic t-shirts, ripped jeans, or flip-flops should not be worn.
  3. Work Environment
    • To maintain a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, we ask that interns refrain from wearing strong perfumes, cologne, or scented products.
    • The Auburn Historical Society & Museum is a drug, alcohol, and smoke-free environment. The use of illegal substances, alcohol, and smoking (including vaping and e-cigarettes) is strictly prohibited while on museum property or during internship hours.
  4. Confidentiality and Responsibility
    • Keep sensitive information private and respect the confidentiality of museum-related matters, including donor and member names and/or contact information.
    • Take responsibility for your assigned tasks and projects, and maintain a log of internship hours.
  5. Commitment to Learning
    • Approach your internship with eagerness to learn and grow. Our goal for internships is to give interns a hands-on, real-life experience at a small historical museum that receives no funding from the town, state, or federal governments, instead relying solely on membership dues, donations, and fundraising.
